E5000 LP — Low Profile Magnetic Drill with 2" Cutter Capacity for Tight-Access Drilling

The Unibor E5000 LP is a low profile magnetic drill engineered to deliver full 2" diameter cutter capacity and 2" depth of cut in the most confined worksite spaces — a combination the manufacturer states is unique in the low profile mag drill category. Powered by a 1200W motor and weighing just 24 lbs, it is built for fabrication, construction, railways, and petrochemical applications where access is restricted and performance cannot be compromised. The drill operates on a 120V single-phase supply and is CSA approved, making it suitable for North American job sites. In addition to annular cutter drilling, the E5000 LP supports countersinking to 1-3/16", extending its utility across multiple hole-finishing operations.

The E5000 LP is the only low profile magnetic drill on the market offering a full 2" diameter cutter capacity combined with a 2" depth of cut, making it the highest-capacity tool in its form factor class. Its 2250 lb magnet holding force and DrillSmart technology set it apart from lower-powered compact alternatives, ensuring both secure workpiece attachment and optimized cutter and machine life during demanding drilling cycles.

                                        Key Features & Benefits

World's Largest Capacity Low Profile Mag Drill

The E5000 LP delivers a 2" cutter diameter capacity and 2" depth of cut within a low profile frame — a combination not available in any other low profile magnetic drill on the market. Contractors working in structural steel, confined overhead spaces, or tight column connections can now achieve full-size hole production without switching to a larger, harder-to-position machine.

                                        DrillSmart Technology

DrillSmart is Unibor's integrated control technology designed to maximize both machine life and cutter life by intelligently managing motor load during the drilling cycle. For contractors, this translates to fewer cutter replacements and reduced downtime caused by motor overload trips on difficult cuts.

                                        Variable Speed Motor (250–500 RPM)

The variable speed range allows the operator to match cutting speed to the material and cutter diameter, which is critical for achieving clean holes and extending cutter life across different steel grades and thicknesses. This flexibility also supports countersinking operations at appropriate speeds without requiring a separate tool.

                                        2250 lb Magnet Holding Force

The electro-magnet delivers 2250 lbs of holding force at 20°C on a minimum 1" thick steel plate, providing a secure, stable drilling platform even in demanding structural applications. A stable base directly reduces the risk of cutter breakage and hole oversize — two of the most common causes of rework on site.

                                        Smart Control & LiftShield

Smart Control and LiftShield are integrated safety and performance features that monitor machine operation and help protect the operator and workpiece during the drilling cycle. These systems add an active layer of protection beyond the mechanical safety strap, which is especially valuable when drilling in inverted or overhead positions.

                                        Countersinking Capability (1-3/16")

The E5000 LP can countersink to 1-3/16", allowing contractors to complete countersunk bolt and fastener holes in a single machine setup. Eliminating a secondary tool or repositioning step saves time and reduces handling on elevated or confined work surfaces.

Compact, Lightweight Frame — 24 lbs

At 24 lbs with a height of just 7-3/64", the E5000 LP is designed to be carried and positioned in spaces where a standard upright mag drill cannot fit. The quick release interchangeable handle and internal cabling further reduce snagging and improve maneuverability in tight access conditions.

                                        LED Work Light

The integrated LED work light illuminates the cutting zone directly, improving visibility in the poorly lit areas — confined structural bays, underside of beams, or interior column connections — where this drill is most commonly deployed.

                                        Common Applications

                                        Structural Steel Fabrication

Drilling bolt holes and connection holes in structural steel members where clearance above or around the workpiece is limited. The low profile frame allows the drill to be positioned in spaces that would prevent use of a conventional upright magnetic drill.

                                        Construction — Confined Access Locations

On-site drilling in tight spaces such as between flanges, inside box sections, or adjacent to walls and columns where a standard mag drill cannot be positioned. The 2" capacity ensures full structural hole sizes are achievable without compromise.

                                        Railway Infrastructure

Drilling ferrous metal components in rail track, rolling stock, and infrastructure where access is restricted and a secure magnetic hold is essential for operator safety. The manual explicitly lists railways as an intended application.

                                        Petrochemical & Industrial Plant

Drilling in fabrication and maintenance scenarios on pipework, vessels, and structural steelwork in petrochemical environments. The pipe adapter kit (sold separately) extends the drill's capability to curved pipe surfaces.

                                        Countersunk Fastener Holes

Producing countersunk holes to 1-3/16" for flush-fit bolts and fasteners in steel plate and structural sections, completing the operation in a single machine setup.

                                        Overhead and Inverted Drilling

The magnet and safety strap system allow the E5000 LP to be used in inverted positions for overhead drilling applications; the manual provides specific guidance on coolant management in this orientation.

                                        Compatible Materials

                                        • Ferrous metals (primary intended material)
                                        • Mild steel (0.2/0.3C carbon steel — rated capacity basis)
                                        • Structural steel sections (I-beams, channels, angles, box sections)
                                        • Steel plate (minimum 1" thickness recommended for full magnet holding force; thinner material requires supplementary restraint)
                                        • Steel pipe and curved ferrous surfaces (with optional pipe adapter kit)
                                        • Railway track and rolling stock steel components
                                        • Petrochemical plant steelwork

                                        Application Instructions

                                        Pre-Operation Checks

                                        1. Ensure the magnet is switched OFF before plugging the machine into the power supply.
                                        2. Inspect all electrical supply cables and extension leads; replace if damaged before use.
                                        3. Verify the underside of the magnet base is clean, flat, and free of damage.
                                        4. Confirm the coolant bottle contains sufficient cutting oil for the required operation.
                                        5. Check that cutter-retaining screws are tightened securely before starting.
                                        6. Secure the machine to a fixed independent feature using the safety strap (RDC4083) and stationary rings (RDC4082) — affix stationary rings into the magnet uppermost side hole.

                                        Mounting Cutters

                                        1. Lay the machine on its side with feed handles uppermost and wind the arbor down to its lowest point to access the socket screws.
                                        2. Place the appropriate pilot through the hole in the cutter shank.
                                        3. Insert the cutter shank (3/4" Weldon) into the arbor bore, aligning the two drive flats with the socket screws.
                                        4. Tighten both socket screws using the hexagon key provided.
                                        5. Always disconnect the machine from the power source before changing cutters.

                                        Drilling Operation

                                        1. Position the machine on the workpiece, switch on the magnet, and confirm secure adhesion before starting the motor.
                                        2. Position the guard over the cutter before activating the machine.
                                        3. Start the motor using the control panel motor start button and select the appropriate speed for the cutter diameter and material.
                                        4. Apply light pressure when commencing the cut until the cutter is introduced into the work surface; increase pressure sufficiently to load the motor once cutting has begun.
                                        5. Do not apply excessive pressure — it does not increase penetration speed and will trigger the safety overload, potentially causing inconsistent slug ejection.
                                        6. Occasionally depress the pilot to confirm cutting fluid is being correctly metered to the cutter.
                                        7. Keep the inside of the cutter clear of swarf, as swarf buildup restricts operating depth.
                                        8. On completion of the cut, ensure the slug has been ejected before commencing the next hole. If the slug sticks, move the machine to a flat surface, switch on the magnet, and gently bring the cutter down to contact the surface to straighten and eject the slug.
                                        9. ALWAYS stop the motor using the MOTOR stop button — do NOT switch off the motor using the MAGNET switch.

Pipe Adapter Kit Fitting (Optional Accessory)

                                        1. Attach adjustable angle plates (RD3328) with cap screws (RD4325) and washers (RD4205, 4 off each) to the magnet sides — do not tighten at this stage.
                                        2. Locate the machine on the centerline of the pipe, ensuring the magnet is aligned with the longitudinal axis of the pipe.
                                        3. Switch on the magnet and move the sliding plates down to the outside diameter of the pipe; tighten screws on both sides by hand.
                                        4. Verify the full length of the moving plates is touching the pipe at front and back, then fasten the plates securely.
                                        5. Feed the safety strap through the lugs at the front of the housing, around the pipe, and pull tight.
                                        6. When cutting, do not use excessive pressure — allow the cutter to ease into the cutting surface.

                                        Safety Data Summary

                                        Hazard Information

                                        • Risk of electric shock if the machine is used in wet or damp conditions, or if the power cord or plug is damaged.
                                        • Risk of fire or explosion if operated in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust.
                                        • Risk of personal injury if the magnet becomes detached from the workpiece during operation — always use the safety strap and stationary rings.
                                        • Cutting tools may shatter — always position the guard over the cutter before activating the machine.
                                        • A slug will be ejected on completion of each cut — ensure the area below the cut is clear.
                                        • Swarf and cutters are sharp — risk of hand laceration when changing cutters or removing swarf.
                                        • Do not use on DC supply or on any structure where arc welding is in progress — DC current will earth back through the magnet and cause irreparable damage.
                                        • Do not use on material less than 1" thick without supplementary restraint — magnetic holding force is progressively reduced on thinner material.
                                        • Risk of entanglement with rotating parts from loose clothing, jewelry, or long hair.
                                        • THIS APPLIANCE MUST BE EARTHED — do not remove the grounding prong or use adapter plugs.

                                        • If the cutter becomes stuck, stop the motor immediately, disconnect from power, and turn the arbor manually — do not attempt to free the cutter by switching the motor on and off.
                                        • If the machine is dropped, thoroughly inspect for damage before resuming use.
                                        • When using in an inverted position, use only the minimum amount of coolant and prevent coolant from entering the motor unit.
                                        • Only use approved cutting fluid — do not use water-diluted cutting oil.
                                        • Only use extension cables approved for site conditions; do not exceed 11-1/2 ft of 3-core 14AWG on a 120V supply.
                                        • Always use the safety chain — mounting can release.

                                        • Any modifications to this machine will invalidate the guarantee.

                                        Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the E5000 LP truly the only low profile mag drill with 2" cutter capacity and 2" depth of cut?
A: According to Unibor, yes — the product description states it is the world's largest capacity low profile magnetic drill, and the only model on the market combining a 2" diameter cutter capacity with a 2" depth of cut in a low profile form factor.

Q: Can the E5000 LP be used on thin steel plate less than 1" thick?
A: The magnet is rated at 2250 lbs holding force on a minimum 1" thick steel plate. Use on material thinner than 1" (less than approximately 3.5mm) will progressively reduce magnetic holding force. If possible, place a suitable substitute material under the magnet and workpiece to achieve adequate thickness; if not possible, an alternative secure restraint method must be used.

Q: Can the E5000 LP be used on DC power supply or near arc welding?
A: No. The machine is designed for single-phase 50–60 Hz AC supply only and must not be used on DC supply. It must also not be used on the same structure when arc welding is in progress, as DC current will earth back through the magnet and cause irreparable damage.

Q: What cutter shank does the E5000 LP accept?
A: The machine accepts cutters with 3/4" diameter Weldon shanks and uses an MT2 arbor bore.

Q: How long an extension cable can be used with the E5000 LP?
A: On a 120V supply, the recommended maximum extension cable length is 11-1/2 ft of 3-core 14AWG. Exceeding this length will result in a loss of magnet traction and reduced motor power.

Q: How often should the carbon brushes be inspected?
A: Brushes should be checked at least once a week if the machine is used frequently. If a brush has worn more than two-thirds of its original length, it must be replaced to avoid damage to the machine.
