Consolideck® BD1 Concrete Floor Densifier & Hardener — High-Performance Silicate Treatment for New & Existing Concrete

Consolideck® BD1 is a high-performance blend of silicates engineered to densify, harden, and dustproof concrete floors across a wide range of surfaces and project conditions. Formulated by PROSOCO, it is designed for use by flooring contractors and trades professionals working on steel-troweled or burnished concrete floors, whether freshly placed or fully cured. BD1 penetrates and reacts with the concrete substrate to quickly create a harder, denser surface while improving light reflectance and overall appearance. It is suitable for new "green" concrete as well as existing floors of any age.

Unlike conventional sodium or potassium silicate hardeners that deposit high concentrations of salts and risk triggering surface Alkali Silicate Reaction (ASR), BD1's unique formulation actively combats surface ASR and will not contribute to surface crazing. Its one-step, no-scrub, no-flush application eliminates caustic wastewater, reducing both labor time and application complexity compared to traditional hardener systems.

                                        Key Features & Benefits

Superior Performance on Type 1L Cement Mixes

BD1's unique formulation is specifically engineered to deliver superior results on concrete containing Type 1L or other ASTM C595 cements. As Type 1L mixes become more prevalent in commercial and industrial construction, contractors can rely on BD1 to perform where conventional hardeners may fall short.

One-Step Application — No Scrubbing, No Flushing

BD1 requires no scrubbing, no flushing, and generates no caustic wastewater, streamlining the application process significantly. This reduces overall application time and lowers labor costs compared to conventional silicate hardener systems.

Fast Cure — Opens to Traffic Within One Hour

Most floors treated with BD1 can be reopened to foot and vehicle traffic within one hour of treatment. This minimizes project downtime and keeps job schedules on track.

                                        Dustproofs Floors of Any Age

BD1 renders concrete floors dustproof whether applied to freshly placed "green" concrete or fully cured existing slabs. Dustproofing reduces ongoing maintenance demands and improves facility cleanliness in warehouses, distribution centers, and commercial spaces.

Combats Surface ASR — Will Not Cause Crazing

Unlike conventional hardeners that can deposit high salt concentrations and trigger Alkali Silicate Reaction, BD1 actively combats surface ASR. It will not contribute to surface crazing, protecting the long-term integrity and appearance of treated floors.

                                        Breathable, UV-Stable, and Low-Maintenance

BD1 is breathable and UV-stable, meaning it will not yellow, discolor, peel, or flake over time. Treated surfaces require no waxing, and floor performance actually improves with regular maintenance and traffic.

                                        Safe and Environmentally Responsible

BD1 is non-flammable, non-toxic, low-odor, and carries a VOC content of 0 g/L, making it compliant with EPA AIM VOC regulations. The absence of caustic wastewater further reduces environmental and disposal concerns on the job site.

Gloss and Hardness Do Not Reduce Slip Resistance

Contractors can apply BD1 to improve surface hardness and light reflectance without compromising underfoot safety. The increased gloss and surface density achieved do not reduce slip resistance on treated floors.

                                        Common Applications

                                        New Construction Concrete Floors

BD1 may be applied to freshly troweled "green" concrete immediately after final finishing and control joint installation, accelerating the hardening and dustproofing process from day one.

                                        Existing Concrete Floor Renovation

Suitable for existing, cured concrete floors of any age, BD1 can be used to restore and improve older slabs in warehouses, manufacturing facilities, and commercial spaces without requiring full resurfacing.

                                        Diamond Polishing & Burnishing Preparation

BD1 reduces the time and cost associated with burnishing and diamond polishing operations by pre-hardening and densifying the substrate, allowing polishing crews to achieve results more efficiently.

                                        Steel-Troweled and Burnished Concrete Floors

Ideal for steel-troweled or machine-burnished concrete surfaces common in commercial and industrial construction, BD1 reacts with the dense surface layer to maximize hardness and durability.

                                        Floors Requiring Dustproofing

In high-traffic environments such as warehouses, distribution centers, retail spaces, and manufacturing plants, BD1 eliminates concrete dusting to maintain cleaner, lower-maintenance floor surfaces.

                                        Application Instructions

                                        Surface Preparation

                                        1. Protect all people, vehicles, property, plants, and surfaces not designated for treatment using polyethylene or other proven protective material.
                                        2. For new concrete: apply after final finishing and installation of control joints. Remove all soft cut saw debris before application.
                                        3. For existing concrete: ensure the surface is clean and structurally sound. Remove all foreign materials including bond breakers, curing agents, surface grease and oil, and construction debris using the appropriate PROSOCO surface prep cleaner.
                                        4. For blanket-cured concrete: clean the surface with an auto scrubber and PROSOCO PreKlean immediately as blankets are removed. Do not allow surface salts to dry on the concrete as blankets are removed.
                                        5. Do not apply to frozen, dirty, or wet surfaces. Surfaces must be clean, dry, and absorbent. Test absorbency with a light water spray — the surface should wet uniformly.
                                        6. If the surface does not wet uniformly, use the appropriate PROSOCO surface preparation cleaner or a mechanical process to remove remaining contaminants.
                                        7. Follow any cleaner with thorough water rinsing. If a d-limonene based cleaner/stripper was used, clean with PROSOCO Cleaner/Degreaser and rinse thoroughly.
                                        8. Acid-stained concrete must be thoroughly neutralized and rinsed prior to application.
                                        9. Application may begin as soon as prepared surfaces are dry and free of ponded water.

                                        Application

                                        1. Confirm surface and air temperatures are within the acceptable range of 40–100°F (4–38°C).
                                        2. Apply using a low-pressure sprayer or microfiber pad. Spray applicators equipped with a 0.5 gpm fan spray tip have proven effective.
                                        3. Apply in one step — no scrubbing, no flushing required after application.
                                        4. Most floors can be opened to traffic within one hour of treatment.

                                        Storage and Handling

                                        Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can BD1 be applied to freshly placed concrete, or does the slab need to cure first?
A: BD1 can be applied to freshly troweled "green" concrete immediately after final finishing and installation of control joints. It is also fully suitable for existing, cured concrete of any age.

Q: Why is BD1 preferred over conventional sodium silicate hardeners?
A: Unlike conventional hardeners that deposit high concentrations of sodium or potassium salts — which can trigger Alkali Silicate Reaction (ASR) — BD1 is specifically formulated to combat surface ASR and will not contribute to surface crazing. It is also safer and easier to apply, with no scrubbing, no flushing, and no caustic wastewater.

Q: Does BD1 require any special equipment to apply?
A: BD1 can be applied with a low-pressure sprayer equipped with a 0.5 gpm fan spray tip, or with a microfiber pad. No specialized or heavy equipment is required.

Q: Will BD1 make floors slippery after treatment?
A: No. The increased gloss and hardness achieved by BD1 treatment do not reduce slip resistance on treated surfaces.

Q: Does BD1 work on concrete containing Type 1L cement?
A: Yes. BD1's unique formulation is specifically designed to deliver superior performance on Type 1L and other ASTM C595 cement mixes, making it well-suited for modern concrete mixes that use blended cements.

Q: Are there any surfaces or conditions where BD1 should not be used?
A: BD1 should not be applied to frozen, dirty, or wet surfaces with standing water. It will not prevent water penetration through structural cracks, defects, or open joints. Surfaces must be clean, dry, and absorbent prior to application.
